Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES IN-HOME PHYSIOTHERAPY WORK?

At the first appointment, I will conduct a full initial assessment, taking a detailed history of your health and lifestyle, and asking questions to help me understand what limitations you are currently experiencing.  Then I will do a thorough physical examination based on your individual concerns. This can include joint range of motion measurement, muscle strength testing, balance testing and gait testing. (Observing your walking to identify possible imbalances or problems). All this will be done in your home. Once the assessment has been completed, I will work with you to develop a treatment plan aimed at helping you get back the function and independence you are accustomed to having.

As part of this process, you will be provided with an evolving home exercise program. If you have a caregiver living in your home, your helper will be included in the instructions, so that you can perform exercises in between treatment sessions.

DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?

You will not require a gym or even equipment of your own. You will be pleasantly surprised to see how simple items you have in your home can be used to help you become stronger!

You can expect treatment sessions to last 50 minutes. Any sessions that exceed this time frame will be billed on a pro-rata basis.

WHAT OTHER SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

In addition to full-service Physiotherapy, I work in conjunction with an Occupational Therapist who can help with adaptations to your home that may be required (such as hand rails or other equipment) and assistive devices that may be beneficial in helping you cope with activities of daily living.

ARE MY TREATMENTS COVERED BY INSURANCE?

My services are not covered by OHIP.  Payment can be made by cheque or e-transfer.  My fees include my travel time and expenses. If you have medical insurance, treatments by PHYSIO COMES HOME may be covered to the extent that the policy covers Physiotherapy on an annual basis. It is best to check with your insurance company to clarify which Physiotherapy services are included in your policy.  All invoices will include my registration number for the insurer.

All non-insurable invoices will be marked paid and signed by myself so that they can be deducted as medical expenses for tax purposes.

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE IN-HOME PHYSIO INSTEAD OF CLINIC-BASED PHYSIO?

1. Added Convenience & Improved Adherence

If you or a spouse/child drives, over the course of your life you will spend years battling traffic behind your steering wheel. With in-home physio, you avoid driving back and forth to a clinic, save on pricey gasoline, and leave more free time in your day for other important activities.

In addition to saving time and effort, having Physio in your own home is particularly helpful to people with limited mobility, poor strength or balance, those with transportation challenges, and those who live remotely from public transportation. In the winter months when attending a Physiotherapy clinic may be challenging or even dangerous, in-home physiotherapy reduces these barriers and increases the likelihood of consistent sessions which leads to better results!

2. Personalized Attention &Home-Specific Rehabilitation

There is nothing like personalized attention! When you have Physiotherapy in your home with PHYSIO COMES HOME, this is exactly what you receive! Your physiotherapy is geared to your own residence, using simple“equipment” found in places like the kitchen. You are able to practice on your own terrain- your own staircases, tub, shower, and kitchen.

When you have Physiotherapy at home with PHYSIO COMES HOME, your physiotherapist is able to spend distraction-free time with just you! There is no need to share the services of the physio with other patients, a situation which is often the case in an outpatient clinic setting. I am able to tailor an in-home exercise regime specifically for you based on your own abilities and carefully monitor your progress so that I can quickly and easily adjust your program or exercises if needed. I am able to see how you are navigating your own home environment and if necessary, provide expert guidance on potential modifications at your home that could potentially lead to better safety and ease in living daily life.

3. Familiar Comfort

When you are treated at home, you have the comfort of being in familiar surroundings, leading to comfort and peace of mind. There is no doubt that the freedom from anxiety and stress that you derive from being treated at home can lead to a more relaxed and positive mindset which can definitely be conducive to improved healing and recovery.

In addition, there is increased privacy at home so that you can feel safe discussing personal health matters, without the worry of strangers overhearing. Finally, with your permission, your spouse or children can be included in your treatment strategies which can be helpful when memory loss is an issue.
